What is HME Filter

Heat and Moisture Exchangers (HMEs) help to reduce mucus production and coughing by humidifying and filtering the air you breathe through your stoma. Atos Medical supplies a number of different HMEs that are designed to suit different lifestyles.

After a total laryngectomy, you breathe through a stoma in your neck. This means the air reaching your lungs is cooler and less humid than it should be. Your lungs will produce more mucus and your windpipe will feel irritated. You may start coughing frequently and have to clean your stoma more often, which can be uncomfortable in public. Most people find wearing an HME helpful.

How Does It Work

When you breathe through it, the HME sits above your stoma, warming the air and making it more humid in the process. It does this by "capturing" the heat and humidity of your exhaled air and then transferring it to the air you breathe in. To really see the benefits of an HME, you need to wear it all the time. If you haven't used an HME before, your lungs may start producing more mucus. This is completely normal, and once your lungs get used to the new HME filter, it will stabilize within a few weeks.
